Historical Significance

The word Homowo translates to "hooting at hunger" in the Ga language. The festival commemorates a pivotal chapter in precolonial history when ancestors of the Ga people survived a devastating famine during their migration to the coastal plains of Ghana. Upon reaping a bountiful harvest, the people held a feast to mock the hunger that nearly defeated them, establishing an enduring annual tradition of survival and gratitude.
